When I was young, the local rodeo had little greased pigs, about 10, which were turned loose at the end of every rodeo. All the younger children scrambled to catch one. And if you were lucky enough to catch one, the greased pig was yours to keep. It was not easy. The pigs ran fast, and the grease made them slick to catch and hold. As much of a tomboy as I was, I was too shy to participate. It was all very entertaining to watch. Eventually the local rodeo substituted chickens and ducks for greased pigs.
In my early art career days, I always carried my camera and took photos of animals and action at the ranches and rodeos. I used these photos as a reference for my paintings. This watercolor GIRL WITH CHICKEN is of a Covelo girl named Sheena after she proudly caught a chicken at the local rodeo. I’ve sold most of my art, but this is an original that I still have and treasure.
