I love these kids who grow up in this little wild west town, learning and loving the old ways, and know how to ride and rodeo. There’s a true art to riding and rodeo. My oldest brother grew up a professional bull rider, and when we were kids on the ranch, he’d strap me onto the yearling calves in our makeshift “rodeo ring,” and I rode, or at least tried my best to stay on. Growing up with two older brothers, I had no choice but to tag along, which meant riding the calves, too. I was a tomboy, tough but not that tough. I’d fall off and cry but was happiest bareback on my horse.
I respect the art of becoming “one with the bull” and the courage and talent that it takes to make the “8 second whistle” in the real rodeos. To me, the art of bull riding reflects life to me.
